A couple of years ago I shared these heart shaped chocolate coated dates on Instagram for Valentine’s day and everybody absolutely loved them! They’re such a fun little treat to make for any occasion, and come together in 20 minutes.

Simply shape medjool dates into a heart shape, dip them into melted chocolate and sprinkle with freeze-fried berries and nuts. The medjool dates have a caramel-like texture and flavor, and truly taste like candy.

Medjool dates

Medjool dates are a pantry staple of mine. They’re a great source of carbs, fiber and potassium, and an ideal snack whenever you need a long-lasting energy boost.

When paired with dark chocolate and nuts, they resemble caramel and taste just like a homemade candy bar.

I love using them in kale salads or blending them into a homemade caramel layer for chocolate bars.

What you’ll need to make chocolate date hearts

This recipe is super simple and requires minimal ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Medjool dates- medjool dates are larger and a lot softer than other dates, making them the ideal date for this recipe
  • Chocolate chips- you can use dairy, dark chocolate, or semi-sweet
  • Freeze-dried Strawberries– I crushed a few freeze-fried strawberries to add a pop of color and sweetness
  • Chopped nuts- I added chopped sliced almonds, but sesame seeds or crushed peanuts would be delicious
chocolate date hearts
  1. Split open the dates at the top and remove the pit and stem. Flatten them gently to form a heart shape
  2. Melt the chocolate with a little coconut oil to thin. Dip each date heart into the chocolate, coating it fully
  3. Place the dates on a parchment lined plate or tray and sprinkle with the freeze-dried berries and nuts. I love to add a little flakey salt!
  4. Refrigerate for 10-15 minutes to harden and enjoy!

These chocolate date hearts are so cute and fun, they’re the perfect sweet fix to keep around! Make them for Valentine’s day, a dinner party, or as an easy dessert to snack on.

Ingredients

  • 6 -8 medjool dates
  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup freeze-dried strawberries, crushed
  • 2 -3 tbsp sliced almonds, finely chopped
  • Flakey sea salt, to top

Directions

  1. Pull apart the medjool dates from the top, keeping them attached at the bottom. Take out the pits and flatten them gently to form a heart shape
  2. Layer a plate or small pan with parchment paper to place the coated dates on top of
  3. Melt the chocolate with the coconut oil in 30-second increments in the microwave until smooth. Using a fork, dip each date into the melted chocolate to coat it fully, then let any excess chocolate drip through the fork. Place the coated dates on your parchment lined plate

  5. Refrigerate for 10-15 minutes to harden. Keep stored in the fridge for up to 3 weeks

This is a paid collaboration with @avocadosloveonetoday. These grilled chicken avocado summer rolls with a creamy avocado jalapeño salsa for dipping are an easy, delicious way to eat more avocado

Did you know that avocados are a good source of vitamin K and offer 136 micrograms of lutein per serving? Lutein concentrates in areas of the brain, where it may help support memory, executive function, and overall brain health. 🧠

An observational study of over 2800 older adults found that people who eat, on average, about 50 grams of guacamole or 70 grams of fresh avocado in a day have better cognitive function than non-consumers. The Avocado Nutrition Center supported this analysis based upon the NHANES survey data using 24-hour dietary recalls. Although the findings cannot be considered causal, and more studies are needed to confirm these findings, the data suggest a role for avocados in cognitive health.https://doi.org/10.3389/fnut.2021.746453
