buffalo tofu

If you’re looking for new ways to enjoy tofu, this recipe is the one for you! The tofu is dipped in a simple plant-based batter, then baked until crispy with an option to air-fry.

It’s tossed with a vegan buffalo sauce made with just a few simple ingredients, and tastes delicious with your favorite dip or tossed over a salad.

Buffalo Tofu Nuggets

To make these nuggets extra crispy, I suggest using extra-firm tofu, or a high-protein tofu, which has the least amount of water content.

  1. Pat your tofu dry and cut into cubes
  2. Dip the cubes in the gluten-free batter
  3. Coat them in your crumbs
  4. Bake until crispy
  5. Serve with your homemade buffalo sauce!

Sounds easy, right? It totally is. This meal is a great option for the end of the week when groceries are running low. You can serve it as a snack or part of a larger meal.

Vegan Buffalo Sauce

The vegan buffalo sauce is made with just 4 simple ingredients. You’ll need:

  • Plant-based butter
  • Frank’s red hot sauce
  • Honey, or pure maple syrup for a vegan version
  • Optional: worcestershire sauce– you can use a vegan option if needed!

The tofu tastes best when served fresh with the sauce. If you wanted to prepare the sauce and bake the tofu ahead of time, I suggest tossing them together right before you’re ready to eat!

This flavorful dish is a delicious way to eat more tofu, and a fun way to change up your weekly proteins! Let me know if you try it in the comments below 🙂

Ingredients

  • 1 block extra firm tofu
  • 1/2 cup cassava flour, or substitute all-purpose or a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened plant-based milk
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup unseasoned panko crumbs or breadcrumbs, use gluten-free if needed
  • Olive oil to drizzle
  • Salt & pepper

Buffalo sauce

  • 1/3 cup plant-based butter
  • 1/4 cup Frank’s red hot
  • 1 tsp honey or pure maple syrup
  • Optional: 1 tsp worscestershire sauce, use a vegan one if needed

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 F
  2. Pat the tofu dry and cut into cubes.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt and garlic powder and mix well. Add in the milk and whisk until a batter forms.
  4. Place your panko crumbs into a separate plate or bowl and season with salt & pepper. Begin dipping each piece of tofu into the batter and then into the panko crumbs to coat them. Repeat until all the tofu is coated and layer them on a parchment lined baking sheet.
  5. Once all the tofu is coated, drizzle the bites with olive oil or cooking spray. Bake for 40-45 minutes, flipping half way through.
  6. AIR FRYER INSTRUCTIONS: place the tofu on your air fryer rack, spray with cooking spray and air fry on 375 F for 25 minutes
  7. For the buffalo sauce, melt the butter in the microwave and combine in a bowl with the hot sauce, honey, and worcestershire if using. You can also heat the sauce in a small saucepan over a low flame, whisking it together for a few minutes until smooth.
  8. Toss together with the tofu and enjoy! If you plan to make this ahead of time, I suggest mixing the sauce with the tofu right before serving it.
