Gluten-free Apple Crisp

This simple gluten-free apple crisp is my go-to dessert when I’m in a pinch. It takes minimal effort to make and taste so good topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Peeled and sliced apples get tossed in maple syrup, cinnamon and tapioca flour then topped with an easy oat flour based crumble. The crisp gets baked until the crumble is golden brown and the apples are warm and gooey.

The apples become buttery soft and caramelize in the oven, and the oat crumble topping just melts in your mouth. This is one of my favorite desserts for any time of year, but especially during the fall with delicious honey crisp apples.

What you’ll need to make apple crisp

Apple base

Apples– I love using honey crisp for this recipe, but you can use any apple variety you like

Tapioca flour- to help thicken the apple slices

Maple syrup- for added sweetness

Pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon, for extra flavor

Crumb Topping

Rolled oats + oat flour– oats and oat flour make up the base of the crumb, and add the perfect crisp texture

Coconut sugar– I love sweetening my desserts with coconut sugar for its caramel-like taste, but brown sugar can be subbed if needed

Coconut oil– coconut oil helps bind together the ingredients into the perfect crumb. I prefer using refined coconut oil for its neutral taste

Cinnamon– for a classic apple crisp flavor

Salt– to balance out the sweetness

Baking soda– though not traditionally seen in crisps, I like the added texture it gives the oat topping

This dessert comes together in just a few simple steps:

  1. Peel and slice your apples, then toss them in maple syrup, tapioca flour and cinnamon in your baking dish
  2. Prepare the oatmeal crumble, then sprinkle over the apples
  3. Bake covered for 25 minutes, then uncovered for 15-20 minutes
  4. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream and enjoy!

You can prepare this recipe ahead of time and rewarm it when ready to serve. It’s easy to make, packed with flavor, and always a crowd pleaser!

Ingredients

  • 2 large honey crisp apples, or 3 medium apples, peeled (about 3-4 cups sliced)
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp tapioca flour
  • 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon

Crumble

  • 1 cup oat flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup coconut sugar
  • 1/3 cup coconut oil, softened not melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F
  2. Slice the apples into thin wedges and add them to a 9″ pie dish. Toss together with the maple syrup, pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon and tapioca flour and mix well.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the oats, oat flour, coconut sugar, cinnamon, salt and baking powder and toss together. Add in the coconut oil and vanilla extract and combine with a fork or your hands to form a crumb topping.
  4. Sprinkle the crumb topping over the apples.
  5. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking uncovered for another 15-20 minutes.
  6. Cool slightly before serving. Serve with vanilla ice cream on top and refrigerate leftovers for up to 1 week.

Best apple crisp- no one knows it’s healthy
5 stars
I’ve made this more times than I can count! It’s always a huge hit, never have leftovers.
I have made different variations, using avocado oil, date sugar, less maple syrup etc and it’s delicious every time!
